Our favorite Festiva event has come and gone, but the donations received at the 2012 Charitable Fund Golf Tournament are already making positive impacts in our communities. With 100 hard hitting competitors and 22 sponsoring companies such as Wells Fargo and Electrolux, we were able to raise over $57,000 for our resort communities.
The tournament began with an early start Tuesday, September 18, where volunteers gathered over $7 thousand in registration fees alone. Participants took off with a bang at 10 a.m., anxious to grab some green. As amateur and professional players made their way around the four time LPGA tournament fairways of the Ellington, Festiva representatives followed offering beverages, raffle tickets and the much used mulligan for additional donations raising an astonishing $3,040.
The competition grew as participants approached one of the area’s longest drives, the seventh hole. To even the odds, three time RE/MAX longest drive world finalist Tom Garber, was stationed at the tee ready to take celebrity shots for less than par players who were willing to make a donation. The SFX sponsored team contributed the most for the Myrtle Beach professional’s mile long drive, while the pro himself gave $1,584 for the Festiva Charitable Fund.
After a day of lengthy drives, perfect putts and finding future friends, all were invited to attend the tournament’s closing ceremony. Gift certificates to the Wachesaw East Pro shop and the tournament trophies were awarded to Mickey Calderiso, Billy Deagan, Zack Byrd and Frank Starce for finishing first with a total score of 54. Second, third and even the final placing teams were also presented with certificates for golf gear from the pro shop as a thank you for their support of our resort communities.
Established almost six years ago, the Festiva Charitable Giving Fund continues to support nonprofit organizations in child education, natural disaster relief and the elimination of poverty. Partnering the with the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina helps Festiva find and fulfill community needs. Previous recipients of our flexible endowment fund include the United Way Back to School Fundraiser where Festiva employees alone gave over $300 last July and the Pisgah Legal Services who received $7,000 in March 2012.
